Castle Diversity

A brief entry.

Of the 40+ theme park plans I've drawn so far, there are 10-12 different Disneyland/Magic Kingdom-style parks (I don't think the world needs 12 different Disneylands quite yet but it has been fun to explore all sorts of variations on a theme).

I believe each park should be unique while retaining the essence of the original.  So here  I've drawn some fairytale castle elevation silhouettes for a portion of my MK-style parks (Anaheim, Tokyo & Paris represent their existing castles):

Nice Castles!

I see what you did there. Your Orlando version is the flipped one from the new studios logo. I'd love to see that in real.

What did you model the other castles after? They look familiar yet I can't put my finger on it.

in my version of a MK-style park i went different in looks for the castle. instead of it looking like how we all imagine that perfect fairy tale castle looks i instead made it more Fantasylandish. by that i mean i used Wonderland as the template. it would be red and purple and yellow/gold and have the suits of a deck of cards. mostly it'd be roundish teirs placed on top of each other like those round cakes tiered onto each other.

Very interesting concepts. It's nice to have the castle designs side by side for size comparisons. I'd love to see the Disneyland style park designs you haven't posted, particularly Shanghai. I agree that each castle should be unique. I'm curious what each of these castles are called and what they're based upon. Cinderella Castle at Disney World can stay in my design, but it would need a new paint scheme similar to the one currently on the Tokyo Disneyland castle. Since Tokyo Disneyland has such a grand courtyard in front of the castle, I propose a grand castle. King Arthur Castle would work nicely. In my design, there aren't any castles themed to the same movie, so in Disneyland Paris, the castle is re-themed to Alice in Wonderland. In Hong Kong Disneyland, the castle there is replaced with Snow White Castle. I'm not sure about what kind of castle Shanghai Disneyland should have, but I just hope that Disney puts an original castle there to start. Thanks a lot for posting you designs and I'd still love to see a description of each castle!

What new Disney parks besides Tokyo Disneyland & Disneyland will need Roger Rabbit rides: Toontown Trolley, Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, Baby Herman's Runaway Baby Buggy Ride, Toontown Tower Hotel, Benny the Cab, RollerCoaster Rabbit, and other Roger Rabbit rides:
Who could will be?
1.Walt Disney World (Disney's Hollywood Studios)
2.Disneyland Paris (Walt Disney Studios)
3.Hong Kong Disneyland
4.Disneyland Shangai
What are you think, Randy?
Also Toontown will be builded for Walt Disney Studios, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disneyland Shangai

Interesting designs. I agree that all MK-style parks should have unique castles, as it gives them their own identity.

I do have one thing to comment on though, I'm not a big fan of having your ideal build-out of the original HKDL plans being in your idea for a Disneyland in Rio. You did a great job at interpreting the original plans, but there are things with it I'm not very comfortable with.

One of the things is having a Phantom Manor clone, this would break the unofficial tradition of having a Haunted Mansion in a different area at each resort. Another thing is the lack of boat attractions beside the canoes (Jungle Cruise, Mark Twain, and rafts to an island) or a railroad. (Disneyland Railroad or Casey Jr.).

I'm also not a fan of having a Toontown clone. I think better things can be done with that space. The lack of a Pirates of the Caribbean is also a bit uncomfortable.

Overall, I would say the original plans for HKDL just feel too small to be in a place like Rio. I would imagine that in such a city, you would need a much larger Disneyland.

Just my thoughts.

(By the way, didn't you mention earlier that you had plans for a DL in Australia? Is that still in the works?)

Anonymous, stitch101, what are you guys talking about?

It's difficult to explain. I'm pretty sure Randy will know what I mean.

MagicLamp, yes, that MK castle is based on the latest WDP logo; a couple of the others (HK & Rio) are based on early versions of the HK castle.

Stitch, I agree with you that Rio deserves a bigger, better or more original first park and that the tradition of land-unique Mansions is a good one to keep. In this case, calling the park (which I based off the original painting for HK - good memory!) Rio was for organizational purposes (so rather than having a HK1 & HK2, I wanted a city that begins with another letter, in this case R). But then I drew a very large and unique 2nd Gate in Rio DisneySea that has an entire Pirates-based land and makes up for what the Rio DL lacks... but more on that in future posts.

Cairns represents Disneyland Australia (Cairns is a small resort city there (and I hadn't used C yet) - you can see a small version of it in the illustration above, and it will be the focus of a feature write-up in the future.

Jeff, I agree with the unique castle principle, but I don't get too bogged down by whose name is attached to it. In many cases, I think the centerpiece castle works best if it is not identifiable as the castle of a particular character or film. That's what I've tried to do here.

Great designs. I wish we had this level of diversity in the real parks. Any idea where I might be able to view some of these original designs for the HKDL castle? Looking forward to Cairns park

I too would like to see the early HKDL concept art.

Nice work! Keep it up!
