Your Park Featured Here

As armchair imagineers, we often have dream parks (or attractions or lands or resorts) in our heads, but, frustratingly, time, artistic or technology restraints keep us from creating visual representations of those dreams.

Drawing, drafting & illustrating are at the heart of imagineering.  Words, written descriptions can only take the idea so far (remember the old truism of a picture equaling 1,000 words).

Maybe I can help.

For instance, this rough sketch was by posted on MiceChat by Mr.HatboxGhost.  It shows his ideas (layout and attractions) for a Disneyland-style park in Texas.

I was able to convert his sketch into an actual-scale conceptual site plan:

The grounds in front of the Georgian-style Independence Hotel are based on the manicured landscape of Colonial Williamsburg:

The site plan shows the Star Tour facade to be based on the Endor Landing platform, complete with AT-AT:

So, if any readers out there have attraction/park site plans or layouts that they would like to see converted to my style and featured on this site, shoot me an email.

I've been meaning to send you my sketches for a park but I keep forgetting.

I still have to redraw and scan them. D:

Hey! If you don't have a scanner (which I do not), the next best way is to take a hi-res digital photo from directly over it (with good lighting). This is what MrHatboxGhost did.

I do have a scanner but the drawings are too weak and scattered, which means I need to redraw the map.

I'm sure you're gonna love the theme, though.

Hi RandySavage,

I have been fascinated by your work and have wanted to turn my own ideas into works of art like these. I do have the time and skills, but I'm curious to how you create these.

Are you using any special programs? What do you use as scale references? Do you do any tracing of satellite photos?

I am also dying to see more of your work, mostly Epcot.

Hey Wes,

I use a wide mix of whatever I can dig up (from satellite pics to official/unofficial site plans & blueprints to models) to serve as references (and scale) for existing parks & attractions. I create non-existing parks, attractions, lands from scratch. The software I use is called AutoCAD.

Cheers.

Thanks! I can see how AutoCAD would be great and easier for this than let's say Photoshop.

Not so much asking for something done with an Armchair Imagineering concept, but have you ever given the idea of making a layout of Epic Mickey's Wasteland sometime after the game comes out? Seeing as it is Oswald's own Disneyland?

FJ,

Thanks for the heads up, I will keep an eye out for the design of the Wasteland park after the game comes out.

On that note, one of the layouts I'm in the beginning stages of working on is for the long-rumored Dark Kingdom/Shadowlands park - a villains-centered version of the MK (with Main Street replaced with a dilapidated ghost town, Maleficent's Castle instead of Cinderella's etc.) - could be similar to the Epic Mickey park.

are you planning to do other parks besides ether disney or universal?

I'm in the early stages of doing an Animal Kingdom/Busch Gardens-type park that focuses on biomes (Arctic, Rainforest, Desert, etc.). My Middle Earth park has no Disney/Universal connection. But, I'll typically attach these as a second or third gates to the dozen Disney/Universal resorts I've established, mostly for organizational purposes.

To answer your question, I'd like to draw some more original parks that have little to no attachment to established Disney/Universal brands, characters & films - the 1980s EPCOT Center being the paradigm of this idea.

Hey Randy,
I was looking at your plans and thought they were AMAZING. I was wondering if you could give some pointers cause im redisining a park I call Port Adventure but its comming out junkey. So if you could respond that would be awsome.

Hey Will, Happy to give pointers. Go to my profile in the About Me section and send me an email letting me know what stage of drawing your in, what you don't like about the way its coming out. Sending pics of where your drawing is helpful, also.

I meant, "Wes", sorry...

Sorry the link was all like you cannot send an e-mail in this format. Will or Wes what ever you chose. So first putting out everything has to be what I call "Universal," worthy because I think IOA is the best. But the reason I dont like how its comming out is looking at yours and I just dont think I have as much in my parks as yours. Like I have ben planning, drawing, and creating for like five months and its not like "Universal," worthy. How do you come up with so creative rides and names, just things like that.

Hehe, I see you've updated the design.
